Ten Questions to Ask Your Maid

Once you’ve found the best maid service in your area, you’ll probably think your housekeeping duties will be all set on auto-pilot. You couldn’t be more wrong! Before your central NJ maid service gets started, ask your housecleaning expert the following ten questions to make sure she knows what she’s doing.

1) Do you have insurance? This is a sneaky question; you should already have the answer to it after speaking with the maid’s company. However, if she falters or does not have a clear answer, clarify before the maid begins her work. You are liable for an uninsured maid who is injured in your home—so get the facts straight before paying a very, very large cleaning fee.

2) What type of training do you have? Like in all industries, proper training is everything for excellent maid services. Make sure your maid has been trained in the best ways to use cleaning products and the industry standards for ensuring that a home is clean. You wouldn’t want your couches spritzed with bleach or your lace curtains soaked in a sink full of hot water, would you?

3) What sorts of cleaning products will you be using today? Find out if your maid service offers green cleaning. If not, ask what chemicals are in the cleaning products. If you are uncomfortable with a particular chemical being used around your children or pets, tell the housekeeping specialist before she begins her work and make alternate arrangements to use a different product.

4) How is your work guaranteed? Most maids will do an excellent job cleaning. However, there is always the possibility that you might find a “bad” maid. If her work is not up to par, find out what protocols are in place to correct the problem. Explain to your maid that you don’t foresee any issues, but remind her that you’ll be expecting her to do the best work she possibly can. If she lives up to your standards, consider tipping her in appreciation.

5) Do you have any cleaning specialties? While many maids are trained to do general housekeeping, some may show advanced proficiency in certain jobs over others. Ask if your maid has a personal specialty. If she does, make note and request her services whenever you need that particular task performed.

6) Do you have any allergies to pets? If you have several dogs but your maid is allergic to pet dander, she’ll suffer the entire time she cleans your home. Ask for a replacement housekeeping specialist to avoid causing medical problems, and make sure you tell the agency the circumstances for the dismissal. Consider putting your pet status on record with the agency if you haven’t done so already.

7) Where can I reach you if I need you after hours? Every reputable New Jersey residential cleaning service should be easily accessible during business hours. But if your appointment is after normal hours, make sure you have a way to reach your usual maid for cancelations or appointment changes. If you find a severe post-cleaning problem after hours, find out the company policy for correcting the issue—some companies may require you to wait overnight before the problem is resolved.

8) How long have you been working for this cleaning service? Most maids will gladly tell you how long they’ve been working for this particular company. If your maid will not share, do not pry—but keep in mind that it could signal a potential problem. Also try to learn how many years of experience in the industry she has, but do not press the issue.

9) Given the size of my house, how long do you estimate it will take? Always compare your maid’s time estimate to the agency’s estimate. If there is a significant difference, investigate thoroughly to avoid overpaying. If the maid finishes slightly ahead of schedule, be sure to show your gratitude by sending a positive review to the agency.

10) Can I guarantee that you’ll return to clean my house the next time I call your company? It’s like the old saying: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. If you’re pleased with your maid’s work, request her services each time you make an appointment with your central NJ cleaning service. If the agency denies your request, gently suggest that you might try another cleaning service; most will acquiesce under such pressure. Build up a positive relationship with your preferred housekeeper and develop trust down the line.

While some of these questions may seem strange, each serves a unique purpose. Collectively, they help you to connect with your maid and build a level of trust—ensuring that the housekeeping will never leave your home dusty or grimy.
