Scrub Those Decorations!

Once again, the holidays have come and gone. As everyone begins shifting back into normal routines and your regular home decorations reclaim their places around the home, it’s a good idea to clean your holiday decorations before you put them away.

Before taking down a Christmas tree, remove all ornaments, tinsel and lights. For live trees, place several extra large heavy-duty black garbage bags on the top and bottom of the tree before hoisting it out of the base and hauling it to the curb. Gently wipe each non-fabric ornament with a moist rag and dry it thoroughly. Wrap delicate ornaments in leftover tissue paper or scraps of fabric before returning them to storage. Place tinsel in a bag and vacuum up any loose strands which can cause stomach pains in pets and children if eaten. Your NJ maid service can help with this chore.

Tree stands accumulate dirt, dust and mold when filled with water. Run yours through the dishwasher before putting it away for the season. Treat any carpet discoloration with rug cleaner and allow it to soak if needed. Roll lights along a reel or store in a loose ball. This will prevent tangling and wire breakage.

Before putting a menorah away, remove the excess wax that may have accumulated on it. Use a blow dryer or boiling water to melt the excess wax. For heavy wax build-up, place the menorah in a lined cookie sheet in a pre-heated oven for up to five minutes. Wipe any residue away before polishing the piece. To remove oil and dirt, soak it in warm water with a small amount of dish soap for several minutes and scrub its tiny crevices with a toothbrush.

Let your maid dust the shelves before putting back your normal decorations. This makes it easier for the housekeeping and cleaner for your family. Since the weather in central New Jersey is still wintry, consider leaving a few winter decorations like snowmen and poinsettias out. They invoke a calm wintry décor without all of the fuss of the holidays.

Once your holiday decorations are ready to be placed in storage, put them in watertight plastic bins. This will prevent any damage from occurring while they are in your basement or attic for the next several months. The dark bins will also prevent fabrics from fading in storage. Label each box carefully so you know what is inside before unwrapping them next December.

Have your maid service clean your living room soon after putting decorations away. Many items will accumulate dust that can settle in your carpets or linens, and it’s best to have it cleaned up before it causes any allergies or unsightly messes. Also give your kitchen a little extra cleaning care after the holiday season is over. Baking cookies and preparing elaborate dinners can leave behind scraps and crumbs, so you’ll want to scrub them before any hungry insects or pests arrive in the spring. Let your house cleaning service wrap up the holidays so you can relax during the rest of the snowy winter months.
